hiyaw brings east africa fusion to the table
Chef Hiyaw Gebreyohannes's mission has always been to use food as a vehicle to help demystify misconceptions of Ethiopia. He started his culinary journey in Toronto before migrating to New York City where he got his feet wet in the restaurant business. He successfully managed a restaurant in Midtown East, where he shifted the all French menu to African fusion. In 2011, Hiyaw founded Taste of Ethiopia, the first packaged Ethiopian food retail line to break into the national market. It has been sold by Whole Foods Market, Amazon, and Fresh Direct.
Hiyaw successfully created a niche for modern Ethiopian fare serving high-profile catering clients, including Tyler Perry, Oprah, President Clinton, Google, Goldman Sachs, and the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation. He continues to introduce a new Ethiopian palate disguised with creative and contemporary recipes, using his Ethiopian eatery GORSHA as a platform to encourage people to rethink how they define African food.
